Chemical Weapons at the Victorville Army Airfield – George AFB

If you worked at George Air Force Base’s bomb dump, trained in the Southeast Disposal Area (SEDA), or rode dirt bikes on the base’s motocross (Mx) track, all of which were located south of Air Base Rd. In that case, you may have been exposed to unsafe levels of Chemical Warfare Agents (CWA) and Chemical Warfare Materials (CWM). These highly hazardous materials were handled, stored, and/or disposed of at the former Victorville Army Airfield/George Air Force Base.

This 1945 Army map’s legend shows that Building T 1107 was used for Chemical Bomb Storage.

When the Victorville Army Airfield was transferred to the Air Force, the Army should have disclosed that Chemical Warfare Agents and Chemical Warfare Materials were handled, stored, and/or disposed of at the base. Yet, there is no mention of chemical weapons, chemical warfare agents, or chemical warfare materials in the  Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s CERCLA Administrative Record (AR) for George AFB. There are no records in the AR records of Building T 1107 being decontaminated or the disposal sites being remediated.

However, one hundred twenty-two records mention “Chemical Weapons” in the CERCLA Administrative Record for the Muroc Army Airfield/Edwards AFB. Aircraft from Victorville Army Airfield/George AFB most likely were involved in chemical weapons testing at Muroc Army Airfield.

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests were filed with the Army Corps of Engineers and Air Force Civil Engineer Center to determine what CWA and CWM were stored in building T 1107.

The bomb dump’s building T 1107, the base’s hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste disposal site (SEDA), is a one-quarter of a mile upstream (the groundwater in the upper aquifer flows northeast) of the supply wells for George AFB, Adelanto, private homes and ranches. The improper disposal of chemical weapons may be responsible for the large number of neurological disorders that the former residents of George AFB have reported. For this reason, the Army and Air Force must release the unredacted records.

Please ask your Senators and Congressional representatives to demand that the Army and Air Force release these unredacted records.
