My name is Steven Adams and I was stationed at GAFB from April 1975 until July 1978. I was assigned to the 35th Security Police Squadron as an 81152.
I lived in the barracks for approximately a year before moving off base. We were notified on several occasions to drink bottled water because of issues with the drinking water but never given anything in writing. We were never informed of any toxic conditions at the base.
My assignments included patrol duties on base, the flight line, maintenance areas, weapons storage, and at all of the ammunition storage areas.
I responded to both on and off base aircraft crashes which involved the fire department and was even assigned to area security in the desert for a downed Navy jet after it crashed.
During my time at GAFB, I was treated at the base hospital several times for breathing problems and severe asthma-related issues as well as stomach and acid reflux problems. At one point, I was even sent to March AFB for testing and treatment.
I had surgery at the base hospital for the removal of several benign tumors that appeared after I was assigned there. Since I left GAFB, I have had approximately 20 additional benign tumors surgically removed and have been diagnosed with stage four Melanoma.
So far, the VA has denied all claims for cancer and related issues and I am awaiting a decision on my breathing issues.
